Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Verne Gay Newsday Fun, lively, imaginative — with a whiff of Disneyfication. Rated: 3/4 May 22, 2024 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) Gatwa is magnetically watchable and not technically gay as a sexless alien, but also, come on. His chemistry with Gibson works, if anything, a little too well. May 17, 2024 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Ncuti Gatwa’s full radiance and considerable charisma is on display in every scene. May 15, 2024 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Alberto Carlos Espinof The new era of 'Doctor Who' knows how to have fun and entertain us, gifting us that magic that at some point had faded. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 Jun 24, 2024 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Pat Stacey Irish Independent If the episodes are mostly forgettable, Gatwa, the first black Doctor and the first openly queer actor to take on the role... is the opposite. May 30, 2024 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Erin Maxwell LA Weekly/Village Voice The newest Doctor assures an injection of much-needed vigor, as these episodes promise to be more vivacious and slightly more demented than previous outings, with far more to say about the state of the world, without blatantly stating it. Peter A. M I don’t know what people smoke when they claim this show is anything but great. Fantastic feels like an understatement. The show is packed with incredible performances, incredible directing and powerful messages behind every single adventure. I cannot wait to see more of THE Doctor. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Scott B Definitely better than the previous 3 seasons. Is there still a long way to go? Absolutely. This season started off dreadfully, but the season started to pick up momentum once we got to "73 Yards". Finale Part 1 was by far the best episode of the season...however Part 2 was a major let down. Gatwa as The Doctor shows promise, but to be fair I have not seen his other work, so I can only judge his skills based on what I saw here. In the December Specials, and the first two episodes of the season, Gatwa looked like he had had about 10 cups of coffee before they shot his scenes. After that, he seemed to "relax". Hopefully he will still be "relaxed" in the next season. Also, I am not a fan of The Doctor crying and/or yelling in almost every episode. I am not saying that The Doctor should be an uncaring iceberg. What I am saying is that overusing the crying/yelling caused it to lose dramatic effect; the primal howl The Doctor gave in Finale Part 2 could have been much more effective had we not seen him do that in almost every episode this season. It also became formulaic: you could expect the crying/yelling to occur at almost the same time in each episode. Now, the "Elephant in the Room". Is a "message" present in the show? Yes, and it is prominent. Anyone who thinks otherwise, is not really paying attention. And this isn't just a Dr. Who issue, many shows being produced now have this issue. With that said, have there in the past been shows that have a "message" embedded in the show? You better believe it. Think back to some of the classic TV shows out there: All in the Family, MASH, Star Trek series pre-2009, Classic Dr. Who, Battlestar Galactica for examples. All of those shows had a "message" of some sort in many of their episodes. Here's the difference between then and now: 1. The show writing was 1000 times better than it is now; many of today's writers only have "The Message" in mind, and don't know how to weave it into a good story. 2. Because of the poor writing skills, many of the writers are unable to write stories that are entertaining, or write characters that are more than one-dimensional, or write characters that the audience will care about. The classic show writers wrote under the premise, "The entertainment comes first, 'The Message' comes second." I honestly do not think people object to a "message" in the shows....but people want to be entertained first and foremost, and not be lectured, talked down to, and have "The Message" shoved into their faces. I am going to watch the next season of Dr. Who. If the show continues its slow and steady improvement...it will be just fine. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Dan R Though I hate to say it, this is the worst season I have ever seen of Dr Who. the more emotional, teary eyed Dr just is not believable in the least and makes me want to turn off the TV on every new episode. The best episode yet was 73 yards and that was only half watchable because Ncuti Gatwa was only in the show for a few minutes at the beginning and the end. I'm sure he is phenomenal at what he does, it just shouldn't be Dr Who. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Patrick B After a very bad, really ridiculous start, the show took off in the middle of the season and had a fantastic finale. Gatwa brings a good vibe to the show, Gibson as his sidekick has a good chemistry with him. But there is room for improvement. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Kaiden F Season was great overall with a really strong showing. Finale part 2 was an undeniable stinker however, so I can't give it full marks, though part 1 was genuinely one of the best episodes of nu who ever produced. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Audience Member I by no means believe it to be a perfect season but I honestly think anyone who rates it below 3 stars did not actually watch the show, the performances were insanely moving (Ncuti and Millie especially) and music was beautiful and so many scenes just blew me away. I can't speak on how good this was for new viewers but as a veteran I think it's a very good continuation of the pre-existing continuity.
